Description

 
Place: VENETIAN LAGOON - Small fortified island situated in front of the coast of the Lido and is part of a complex system of fortifications built to protect Venice and the Venetian lagoon from the Serene Republic, French Empire, the Austrian Empire and the Kingdom of Italy.

 

History: The islet is Inserted in the system of fortifications that the Republic of Venice realized against the Turkish threat, this octagon was charged, along with another 3 octagons to seal off the enemy ships that were able to penetrate into the lagoon through the port of Malamocco.

Fortified after the war of Candia, it was modified in the nineteenth century during the Habsburg rule by strengthening the perimeter wall and the addition of batteries. They were also armed the walls that faced towards Alberoni, probably because there would come the most problems in case of attack.

The military continued to use the octagon until the end of the Second World War, after which it was bought by private.

Buildings & Construction:

  • Main building of 400 sqm;
  • Dependance of 55 sqm.

 

Main building: It consists of 10 rooms and gallery by the flattened barrel vault (width of 2 m, height 2 m, length more than 10 meters) with deep grooves that lead to the windows overlooking the lagoon. A small part of the building of 30 square meters has shaped chapel. The building has a large terrace (100 square meters) with a panoramic view of the Lagoon of Venice.

 

Condition: to be restored.

 

Land: Park of 2,000 square meters, with

  • a series of walkways;
  •   a perimeter path interrupted on two corners by stone benches from where one can admire them the beautiful view of the lagoon and park;
  • a paved square with a central octagonal well.

 

Berth: a small marina for berthing of boats.

 

Utilities

 

Water: A well constructed by Austrian soldiers guarantees fresh water.

 

Electricity: A generator can make this oasis by the independent supply of electricity.
