Place: Situated on a rocky outcrop with a 360 degree view that stretches from the sea to the mountains offering wonderful views.

Period of construction: The Fortress, a witness of many fierce battles, was built in the twelfth century.

 

Destination: the fortress was guarding the ancient Via Maior, of great strategic value because it represented the main connection with the Duchy of Montefeltro and Tuscany. 

 

Legends & Oddities:

  • According to legend, in the basement of the fortress was murdered in 1304 Gianciotto Malatesta, the same as years before, mad with jealousy, had killed his wife Francesca da Rimini and his brother, Paul, the star-crossed lovers celebrated by Dante in his Divine Comedy.
  • Between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in the walls of the fortress were discovered hiding many of the coins. Some families of farmers in the area had made a second job, spending their free time scouring with hoes and hammers. This oddity can be explained by imagining that in this area have operated the bands of brigands, some of them have wanted to conceal part of the booty for future use.
 
Condition: In 2000 it was restored to 70%.
